It’s one of the harsh realities of life. Everyone wants to live a “happy”, fulfilling life, one infused with meaning and purpose, but few will ever reach that goal. Many will crave the state of being great so much that they will live a life full of delusions. I’ve touched upon this subject previously in one of my many John Steinbeck quotes that to be great is to be somewhat lonely. I think there’s plenty of merit to this claim, for I think most people don’t end up living a life that they find meaningful or worth living or whatever you want to call it. It’s one of the harsh realities of life. The question then becomes: what will you do about it?
As pessimistic as that latter claim is, I think there’s hope for people who do aspire toward something higher than mediocrity, and that hope lies in taking action. We take action by critically examining ourselves and being truthful in that assessment. It’s important to not be influenced tremendously by the people around us, and to utilize the tools necessary to make one’s vision for one’s life come true. It’s a lofty goal, but then again, you only live once and greatness doesn’t come easily.
