I’m admittedly a clothes person. That’s where I tend to spend a lot of my money. I don’t go on many fancy vacations, I don’t play video games, and I don’t spend that much money on food (it just has to be reasonably healthy). But I’ve always had a thing for well made clothing and I image when I’m financially stable that I will invest money in nice clothing.
My parents don’t care for clothing at all, so when I was younger, I wore very basic, cheap clothes, the kind you could purchase at outlet stores. I had a lot of second hand items as well that I inherited from family friends. I remember in high school, I would go to Old Navy by myself to pick out outfits I liked, that was my personal splurge.
Having worked my way up with clothes starting from the very basic brands to, now, I mostly wear Patagonia-level items, I’ve come to really appreciate the difference in quality of clothing that exists. Sometimes, investing in a more expensive item of dress is cheaper in the long run than buying a lot of fast fashion items, which don’t really last.
Through my appreciation for clothing, I’ve come to view my education in the same way. I see my development as an intellectual and my day-to-day workflow as having a certain level of quality. And I’ve learned from my love of clothing that quality matters.
