I don’t watch television, but I do watch YouTube. That’s my main source of entertainment and screen time. The thing about YouTube is that anyone can post videos on there. There’s no filter, no quality check, just press publish and your content is out there for the world to see. One thing I’ve noticed about these videos is that people love to give advice. It’s one of the major genres out there on YouTube. However, after watching a lot of different people with different perspectives give out advice on various topics, I’ve noticed that there exists a lot of contradictions out there and a lot of people who are, quite frankly, not qualified to give advice.
I think the whole concept of advice videos are kind of wack. If it were me, I’d only give advice to people I knew, such as a mentee I’ve been working with for a period of time or maybe a friend or family member I understand who asks for my opinion. Advice often is case-specific and frequently does not apply broadly to a wide audience. For instance, I think some people (i.e. those with talent and means) should be chasing their passions and dreams while others really should not. It just depends on the individual. This makes the social media genre that dolls out advice rather a ridiculous thing.
