Every morning before I have my cup of coffee and I’m still really groggy, I have a little bit of an existential crisis questioning everything and my purpose in life. However, once I get up, drink some water, wash my face, have a healthy dose of caffeine, and, assuming that I’ve slept a generous 8 to 10 hours, everything about my mood goes back to normal and I continue to grind away toward my hopes and dreams. Happiness is a function of health.

As someone who’s been labeled with bipolar from multiple healthcare professionals, I find mood fluctuations to be relatively normal. I’ve been managing it for over a decade with and without pharmacology so I’ve gotten the hang of it by now. Yet, I’ve noticed that the most important thing I can do for my overall general mindset is to sleep well, eat a healthy diet, and schedule some daily exercise in. If I just get these three key components into my life, then I’ll feel like a million bucks, and a lot less stressed about exactly where I am in life.

I think most of us tie our happiness to external components such as peer pressure, material success, and the never ending chase for prestige. However, happiness is integrated with our mood, which is a component of our overall physical and mental health. To be happy is to be healthy.
