It is a shame that the China-US tension is not great, for I am a Chinese American in the strictest sense having been born in China and then immigrating to the United States. Sure, I spent a few years in Canada, but that’s a relatively neutral country. I still regard China with a certain warmth and familiarity that I’m sure will never fade. The historic architecture, the culture, the language, the food, it’s all just who I am deep inside. Everyone loves their mom, it’s just too easy.
But America is where I grew up and received all of my training. It is where my loyalty lies. I would never go back to China to do serious work (because I don’t read Chinese). It would be a bit like getting tortured (because I can’t read there). It makes sense for me to pursue a career that would help ease the tension between the two countries. I think this would be beneficial for my mental health.
