The “family first” motto of the conservatives needs adjusting. Family is unquestionably important and a critical and necessary part of being a functional member of society. It is, in many ways, our foundation. But should it always be first? That’s questionable to me. I come from a good family and I consider myself lucky in that sense. However, it’s very natural to feel a sense of disagreement with your family members. Perhaps it’s an innate evolutionary instinct to promote healthy genetics (i.e. prevent inbreeding). It’s the rare person–usually children–who truly feels they are 100% in sync with their family. Family time, for many, can thus feel more like a chore, albeit a necessary one. Therefore, it makes more sense to me to prioritize other things in life that brings joy and meaning whether it be friends, careers, hobbies, etc… I don’t think family should be first.
