My mother, who I image had options in her youth because she was smart and pretty, decided to marry the poor boy because she, presumably, also has a good heart. Unfortunately, that doesn’t guarantee that your child will do the same. Marrying the poor boy has its pros and cons. Generally speaking, people who are poor–and I don’t just necessarily mean in terms of money–need to resort to relatively desperate means to gain an advantage because they are, by definition, behind on some levels. It’s a lot more thrilling in the beginning. However, their tactics typically don’t last because I think they just lack the means or ability to make whatever they are initially presenting persist long-term. I wonder if she knew that when she married my dad.
