The culture of the United States is predominantly forged by individuals of caucasian descent. It makes sense as our founding fathers and most of this country is white. As consequence of this, many minorities, myself included, who adopt the culture tend to go through a period of “racial confusion”. I certainly went through that during my youth.
The teenage brain goes through a period of idealism during the adolescence phase and, during mine, I adopted a very idealistic ideal of “racial homogeny”, if you will, where I sort of thought that I was white. Not in a literal sense, but I think a part of me believed that my life experiences as an Asian American man were somehow equal to those of a white American man. They’re not, and I think I paid the price for that in terms of, say, my overall negative experience in medical school.
I don’t know the solution to this issue, or if it’s an issue at all. Maybe it’s just a part of the minority experience in a country where the dominant culture is not forged by your own race. It’s not really practical for, say, the Asians to all of a sudden rise up and dictate the culture as we are only such a small percentage of the population. America is a democracy and a melting pot after all.
