America is a racially diverse country: a melting pot, if you will, where communities are forged by people of all races and backgrounds. In an ideal world, people would be free of prejudice and bias and everyone would be treated equally, but that’s just not how most human beings function.
Many immigrants to this country, especially, bring with them their prejudices of other countries and races and those prejudices are often times passed down subconsciously to their children. Thus, when it comes to integrating with American society, it often rests on the immigrant child to determine the exact timing when he or she will be incorporated into their communities.
For immigrants from countries where the culture is in direct contradiction to American culture, the jump can feel even more precipitous. Yet, at the end of the day, the ultimate decision to settle rests upon the individual and not the community at large.
