I don’t mean this statement in the literal sense, for that’s quite obvious. I mean it in metaphorical terms. If you want to be respected, or do well in this world, it’s important that you don’t cut people out because they have a different point-of-view from you. Being in America, this poses as an especially challenging thing to do given both the current political climate along with the racial and ethnic diversity within this country–not to mention the gender war and religious freedom here. At the end of the day, people have the right to think and do what they want in America, so long as it’s within the limits of the law and does not harm other citizens.
Yet, from the alternative perspective, I also understand that it takes a certain level of baseline intelligence to see from another’s point of view. Not every individual has the innate capacity to do this. Therefore, as adults, I suppose it’s also about understanding your limitations and keeping your distance from people who you may consider to be antithetical to your values.
