America is a country that strives to be fair. That’s what’s great about this place and makes it the “best” on many metrics. Fairness tends to select for individuals who are genuinely talented and experts at what they do. In other countries, nepotism, for instance, picks out individuals who may not be that great at the job. This could lead to resentment and instability within the institution that they’re operating in. Yet, for the most part, America operates a little differently and I imagine given the high lawyer-to-citizen ratio within this country, people genuinely care about fairness and try to enforce it in a strict sense.
However, it’s also important to remember that many things are not inherently fair: beauty, intelligence, athleticism, wealth these are all attributes that favor particular individuals in the sense that some people are just born with it. Thus, in the effort to strive for fairness, it can get a bit ridiculous because fairness in the strictest sense perhaps does not exist (You can’t erase the past). Therefore, for the United States, a relatively young country, to advance as a society, it is necessary for its citizens to start to reevaluate what it means to be fair.
