One of the things that sort of vexed me about my experience in medicine is that the average salary of different specialties were all kind of freely advertised. For those of us who are number driven, like myself, it really starts to influence your decision in choosing what it is you want to do.
Additionally, for some people, it starts to get a bit competitive in this sort of ridiculous kind of way. I’ve alluded to the fact that intelligence and maturity don’t always go hand-in-hand in the sense that there exist brilliant physicians who are still children at heart.
I don’t know what the solution to this would be. But I propose that perhaps the answer is to have an outside source of income for people in different specialities and to have that income not be publicized. That way, the feeling toward which specialty one strives for is untarnished by the money variable.
