Cancer is one of those serious ailments that afflicts many members on my maternal side of the family: I’m probably going to get cancer. Incidentally, the rate of cancer is on the rise in young people in the world, so I’m a little bit worried actually. Moving toward veganism, a journey I’ve recently embarked on, is a step in the right direction for sure. Given my time in healthcare, I’ve picked up on a lot of habits that can be categorized as both beneficial and not to the development of malignancies.
For instance, while smoking is very common among men (50%) in China (my uncle smokes), it’s probably good that I don’t smoke and have never smoked. If cancer were all of a sudden cured, I’d probably be a smoker because, let’s be serious, I’m moving towards a career in the arts. Nevertheless, even if cancer were an entity that we don’t have to worry about anymore, smoking is probably still not going to be great for the lungs.
What I’m going for here in this post is that, while it’s ideal in terms of health to be completely substance free, most of us need some sort of quick high from some type of substance to feel a bit of a jolt and escape from the harshness of everyday life. I wrote in a previous post that I started drinking again, and I think I’m going to take it a bit easy on that front to prevent the risk of slipping into another addictive cycle. What is your substance of choice?
