Being interested in something is like being in love: you can’t fake it. When I was applying to medical school, I volunteered at the children’s hospital my junior and senior year of college in preparation for the application cycle and I distinctly remember thinking to myself: I don’t love this job, but I’m in it too far to stop. In retrospect, I think a lot of people experience that sort of momentum in their careers where they just feel obligated to continue because they’ve gone a little too far.

However, I’ve come to learn that having interest is immensely important in one’s profession. I’m currently stuck in a job where there is very little natural engagement coupled with the fact that I’m just not that great at it. Luckily, I’m in a location where it’s very easy for me to switch. Thus, I think putting yourself in situations where you have options is generally a positive thing.
