Being interested in something is like being in love: you can’t fake it. When I was applying to medical school, I volunteered at the children’s hospital my junior and senior year of college in preparation for the application cycle and I distinctly remember thinking to myself: I don’t love this job, but I’m in it too far to stop. I think a lot of people experience that sort of momentum in their careers where they just feel obligated to continue despite good reasons not to.
However, I’ve come to learn that having interest is immensely important in one’s profession. I’m currently stuck in a job where there is very little natural engagement coupled with the fact that I’m just not that great at it. Luckily, I’m in a location where it’s very easy for me to switch. Thus, I think putting yourself in situations where you have options is generally a positive thing.
