I came upon this saying when I was still a graduate student at UC Davis and, perhaps, a medical student at Rush University. At both of those institutions, I was just quite honestly pretty bored, or at least experienced moments of intense boredom. Now, boredom is not necessarily a bad thing and can be conducive to getting some serious work done, which at the end of the day is what medical school and graduate school is for.

Nevertheless, I developed habits in medical and graduate school that I couldn’t let go of which are, to be honest, not healthy. This brings me back to the proverb that the devil finds work in idle hands. I think it’s important for a person of any smarts to keep themselves busy and mentally stimulated. Without a healthy form of stimulation, it’s so easy to slip into habits that become ingrained as addictions.
