The decision not to have children is highly consequential for one’s life. Think of all the possibilities that present themselves with all that time and extra capital at one’s disposal. The world is literally your oyster. You can do anything with all that time. For me, I want to do the arts, but with the rise of artificial intelligence, are those extra years of school still worth it? Does art have any more value in the marketplace now that it can be produced with a click of a button? That’s the million dollar question.

Yet, the question of whether or not one should spend their entire life chasing money is still a valid one. With children, money is essential. College tuition is not cheap. Yet, with the desire to not procreate, that’s no longer an issue. I think society at the moment is moving toward a direction where more and more people are not having children. It’s an issue with cost, it’s an issue with the economy, and it’s probably a lifestyle issue as well.

I think one thing’s for sure, without a family to keep one company, life is a little simpler and quieter. I can afford, for instance, to dedicate my life to the study of the architecture. Such a life would otherwise not be possible had I chosen a more conservative path. It’s certainly a great time to be alive.
