The question is why. Why after all these years of training as a biomedical engineer and neuroimaging scientist am I willing to relinquish a stable career trajectory for the ostensibly riskier option of returning to school to become a licensed architect? The answer is not that I regret my scientific training. On the contrary, my doctorate in biomedical engineering has taught me how to investigate complex systems and think across multiple, diverse disciplines. Yet, throughout my professional life, I have increasingly felt that something essential is missing. I was raised in a traditional Chinese American immigrant household and in a community in which professional stability and economic security were emphasized much more strongly than artistic exploration. I followed that narrative successfully. While I am proud of that work and the discipline it required, I have come to recognize that creativity is not a mere hobby for me; it is an essential part of how I engage with the world and who I am as an artist. My decision to pursue architecture is, therefore, not a rejection of my past, but an effort to expand it into a field where technical rigor and artistic expression are inseparable.

Architecture appeals to me because it melds the mathematical reasoning of engineering with material experimentation, cultural interpretation, and humanistic values: it is both an art and a science. As a neuroimaging scientist and biomedical engineer, I aspire to become an architect who designs hospitals and clinical spaces that reduce cognitive burden, improve staff workflows, and support the well-being and retention of workers amid growing domestic and global healthcare workforce shortages. My vision is to combine my advanced training in the field of neuroimaging, my strong mathematical ability, and my love of the fine arts to build physical environments that promote healing and innovation. As an experienced researcher with a strong publication record, I hope to advance the emerging field of neuroarchitecture, an evidence-based form of practice that weaves neuroscientific principles into design, and to help train the next generation of architects as an academic. 

I’m choosing to apply to SCI-Arc because I am impressed by its unique warehouse campus, its strong reputation in the field, its location, and the fact that it’s an institution that promotes a nonhierarchical and experimental approach to teaching that emphasizes the latest technological innovations while also prioritizing the historical and cultural components. The ethos at SCI-Arc resonates well with my nontraditional and often experimental academic background. Furthermore, I believe that the master’s thesis requirement at SCI-Arc will offer an excellent opportunity for me to conduct an independent and scholarly survey of the field of neuroarchitecture and allow me to forge meaningful and long-lasting professional relationships with faculty members at the institution in the process. SCI-Arc’s location in Los Angeles would also place me within a diverse architectural and healthcare environment in which to begin developing a career in healthcare design.

Finally, I just want to emphasize that financial support will be a critical factor in determining whether I can responsibly pursue this transition. Currently, I’ve estimated my cost of living for the 3-year Master of Architecture I program to be around *******, which I plan to finance through a combination of federal and private loans. As a domestic midcareer applicant, I must weigh the benefits of this professional transition against the long-term burden of debt. The Higher Education Access Scholarship would make this career pivot feasible and enable me to bring my scientific training, research experience, and budding multidisciplinary design practice fully into SCI-Arc’s academic community.
