I went to my first (guest) architecture lecture yesterday by an architect at Yale named Anna Dyson. For perhaps one of the very first time, I actually understood most of the concepts and could follow along with the material–unlike how I felt during my time in biomedical engineering, medicine and the sciences. There’s something about a science lecture that can really get you really confused and feeling like you don’t belong there. I never know if everyone in the audience is confused or if it’s just me. I imagine that architecture conceptually is just a bit simpler than PhD science being presented, so it’s probably not entirely my fault at the end of the day. There are very few architecture PhDs, and I’ve already discussed how the math is just a bit simpler than in a traditional advanced science class. There’s something rewarding about being able to actually understand the material being discussed and the ability to gain something insightful from a lecture series. Isn’t that what being an “expert” is all about?
