Energy drinks at SCI-Arc cost about four dollars, and a cup of coffee here will set you back about the same. I don’t think there’s really another cheaper way of getting caffeine. I brought (caffeine) pills to the studio, but that doesn’t do nearly as much justice as the drug in liquid form: it’s just not the same buzz. This got me thinking about the state of flow that artists and creators often enter. If the state of flow is one that is drug-induced, does it even count? The flow state is undoubtedly important to achieve in one’s profession, and I feel it is a critical part of finding fulfillment in one’s work. To reach that level of flow, you need an underlying foundation of health (i.e., you must be in a good mood), so your mental and physical health needs to be good enough to support it. Attaining that state of flow should be the goal in one’s profession, and it should be a feeling you can sustain long-term; in other words, you should be excited to go to work every morning. It shouldn’t be a struggle.
