I’ve noticed that it’s really easy to miscommunicate on social media, like really easy. First of all, it’s just really simple to post on there: you just need to push a button and you can literally post anything. In the academic world, we write first drafts, edit, revise, and repeat that process many, many times. Not on social media. You just sort of think of something, usually in the heat of the moment, and click the post button. It’s way too easy. No wonder people are getting all these negative psychological reactions from posting on there.
Now imagine being an influencer with thousands of followers. All of a sudden, what you post has a numeric grade that is relatively arbitrarily being measured by a system not designed to be just. I can’t imagine making a livelihood off of social media. It’s also fascinating that people who do strive to “make it” on there require a certain type of format to win over audience. If you don’t film or podcast, you’re in for a tough ride. Further, your content is constantly being openly rated through the followers and like metrics. It’s truly a harsh world out there in the digital space.
