Human beings are inherently competitive, and, in this economy, we compete for everything from spouses to jobs to, well, trivial prizes. Life is inherently a competition and resources are not unlimited. Yet, competition can bring out of human beings a darker side. It’s sort of an interesting phenomenon that can happen. I’m a tennis player and you definitely see it on the courts. Some people are just naturally more competitive in sport than others. Some will resort to psychological tactics to get a win. This would be what I imagine would be construed as poor sportsmanship.
In life, I’ve lost friends to what I perceived to be competition. I think some people, when placed in the presence of those who are genuinely better cannot stand to feel lesser. That is just how strong the competitive drive is in certain individuals. I’ve read that men, on average, are innately more competitive than women. I wonder what the consequences are in this status quo where it is women who are achieving more in terms of academics and gaining traction in the workforce? It is the era where women are rising and men are, perhaps, in decline. Parents nowadays, for the first time in human history, have a preference for newborn girls.
I don’t really know what else to say on this front. I think in the competitive society we live in, it is somewhat beneficial to perhaps segregate individuals based on their unique skill levels to sustain order. I perceive competition and both the positives and negatives that result from them to be an important part of living as a citizen within a modern capitalistic society. Competition is inevitable. It’s not comfortable, but it can benefit you if you do it right.
