In contemporary American society, I sense that there’s a lot of greed that’s pervasive amongst some of its citizens. I feel this to be a product of Capitalism and could result in the erosion of traditional values or morality or just common decency. Some people will do anything to attain status in this society and there’s really no effective filter to weed out those who really don’t possess the proper values to adequantely handle that much power and wealth. It really is sort of the luck of the draw. Do we really want a society where the aristocrats arrived there based mostly on luck?
I think above all, this leads to a lot of resentment amongst citizens because what ends up happening is that people who don’t necessarily deserve what they receive (i.e. people who resort to unscrupulous means) are attaining massive amounts of money and power and, perhaps, are either losing it quickly or hoarding it while those who may actually deserve it (and can do good with it) are left in the gutters. This is just a conjecture based purely on my observations but I do sense that it is a major facet of modern America or, rather, even just late stage Capitalism.
